Physically dirty water has its characteristic cloudy, smelly, feeling if drunk. Chemically has a high pH content, and has a high mineral content or poor mineral content. 



Microbiologically contaminated by pathogenic bacteria (E coli bacteria that can cause diarrhea and salmonella which can lead to typhoid)
